Red Ass Monkey: Which Species Of Monkey Have A Red Butt?

Some of the most ancient and arguably spiritual creatures in the world are monkeys. They are, for instance, the closest species in existence related to humans. For years, they have helped us satisfy our curiosity about medical, historical, and even the sociological aspects of human life.

And while there are various things to learn about them, one thought, in particular, may come easily to mind. Why do some monkeys have red butts? Is there some sort of use for it, or is it just an innate attribute?

The answer as to why is fairly simple. Monkeys develop red butts as it is one of their primary means for communicating that they are ready to mate. Specifically, female monkeys showcase their swollen red bottoms to their male counterparts to signify that they are in heat.

When a female is most fertile, that is also when her bottom has most swelled and protruded. Aside from this, female monkeys also whine loudly, pout, and adopt a playful attitude towards males to show their readiness to take part in copulating.

Although there have been claims that the more prominent and redder a female monkey’s bottom is, the more a male is attracted to her, new studies have shown that male monkeys mostly preferred females who had taken a long time since they last gave birth to be their chosen mate.

That said, here is a list of monkeys who can experience having red butts.

Rhesus Macaque

The Rhesus Macaque or Mavava mulatta are Old World monkeys that have been around for a long time. These monkeys spend most of their days on land and are able to form relationships with one another.

Even so, the average Rhesus Macaque female can only produce one offspring each year. That offspring will then be raised within the same community until it can manage independently.

Expert Tip: As for reproduction, some studies show that female rhesus macaques have a higher chance of obtaining a mate when she has a very swollen and red bottom.

Baboons

Baboons

Baboons themselves vary in their species. For instance, there are the hamadryas, olives, yellow, guinea, and chacma baboons.

What they do have in common is that all female baboons can have red bottoms when they are preparing to mate. Specifically, this can happen for about 10 to 20 days every month as a method of ovulation. When this happens, male baboons are given the go signal that the female is ready for mating.

Mandrills

Mandrills are some of the oldest monkeys in existence. Subsequently, they are also one of the most colorful mammals and the largest type of monkey you can find. If you’ve never seen one before, Rafiki from the Disney Movie “The Lion King” is actually a Mandrill.

Like Baboons, female Mandrills also swell their bottom a bright red when in heat. However, unlike Baboons, the butts of male Mandrills can actually shine a bright hue of blue, red, yellow, and pink, which can only intensify as their testosterone levels rise.

Celebes Crested Macaque

The Celebes crested macaque is primarily found in the country of Indonesia. They are commonly large in size and have a distinct short tail. Although they do not have rainbow-colored bottoms like Mandrill males, the behinds of female Celebes crested macaques have an intense red hue when they are in heat.

They also swell to a high degree when it is time for the mating season. On normal days, however, female Celebes crested marques appear paler in appearance than their male counterparts.

The Japanese Macaques, also known as “snow monkeys,” are also fellow Old World monkeys. They get their nickname from their natural habitat, the northernmost Japanese islands, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Honshu.

Like other monkeys, the female Japanese Macaques also display a reddish color on their bottom to signify that they are ready for mating.

Chimpanzees

Chimpanzees actually share around 98 percent of genes with humans. Although they naturally gravitate towards staying above treetops, they are more than capable of walking on their legs within a given distance.

Like humans, chimps are also highly social primates and are intelligent enough to use tools to aid, such as using a stick and a rock to break open a fruit.

Expert Tip: Unlike other monkeys, female chimpanzees do not have a mating season and are able to give birth at any time in the year. However, when female chimps are in heat, their bottoms will still swell and become bright red.

Like humans, monkeys have developed their way of life as well as their distinctive culture over the years that experts have only begun to scratch the surface of. From the rainbow-colored bottoms of the Mandrills to the intense red bottoms of the Baboons, life, as we know it, may differ from them. Still, their way of communicating is one that is overtly strange yet highly fascinating.
